Most people searching for a Lemlist alternative are not unhappy with the product. They are unhappy with what it costs six months in. Lemlist's Email plan is flat and generous, but the Multichannel plan that carries LinkedIn, calls and WhatsApp is priced per user, and the credits that power verification, phone lookups and intent signals are billed on top of both.

Disclosure before the tables: SDRclose publishes this blog and appears in the comparisons below. All Lemlist prices here are official, taken from its pricing page as fetched on September 5, 2026, and every competitor figure carries the month it was checked. Where Lemlist is the better buy, we say so.

Key takeaways

  • Lemlist's Email plan is $69 a month, or $55 on annual billing, for 50,000 emails a month with unlimited contacts and unlimited users, as of September 2026. That tier is not per seat.
  • Multichannel is $109 per user per month, or $87 annual, and that is where team cost compounds: four seats is $4,176 a year on annual billing.
  • Credits are a second bill. A thousand credits cost $10, verification costs 5 credits per lookup, phone numbers 20, and intent signals from 20 to more than 400, as of September 2026.
  • Reviewers on G2 rate Lemlist about 4.6 out of 5 from more than 1,331 reviews, with recurring complaints about credits charged for failed lookups and a Chrome extension that has to be reinstalled.
  • Pick Lemlist anyway if you want LinkedIn, calling and WhatsApp inside one cadence, or its community template library with published reply rates.

Why teams look for a Lemlist alternative

Lemlist is a well-reviewed platform. DealsFlow's March 2026 review reports a G2 rating of about 4.6 out of 5 from more than 1,331 reviews, and the recurring criticisms it lists are specific rather than sweeping: the Chrome extension must be removed and reinstalled to work, credits are charged for failed lookups, analytics are shallow, and the learning curve is steep.

Cost is the theme that shows up in community discussion. Puzzle Inbox's analysis of 547 tool mentions across r/sales, r/startups, r/coldemail and r/SaaS between January and May 2026 found Lemlist in 9% of mentions, with per-seat price creep as its most common complaint. Smartlead led at 34%, Instantly at 26% and Apollo at 14%.

Two other patterns push teams to look around. Teams that only need email discover they are paying for LinkedIn and calling steps they never build. Teams that do use those channels discover the seat multiplier when they add a second and third rep.

Read the table for what it does well before what it costs. The Email plan is genuinely per workspace: unlimited users, 50,000 sends a month, no seat math. If email is your only channel, Lemlist is not the per-seat villain the phrase "Lemlist alternative" implies, and the honest comparison is on features, not price model.

The seat math starts on Multichannel. So does credit consumption, because phone numbers and intent signals are the point of that plan and both draw credits per lookup.

Official prices as of September 2026 for Lemlist, Instantly and Smartlead, whose pricing pages we fetched. Apollo and Reply.io figures are reported, per Warmly's Apollo pricing breakdown and Amplemarket's May 2026 Reply.io analysis. The Growth-plan reply inbox limit comes from an r/coldemail thread, and Smartlead's analytics scope from MarketBetter's review. Per seat vs per workspace: what a four-person team pays in a year

Assume four people who all need to send. List prices, annual billing where a vendor publishes an annual rate, no add-ons.

Tool and plan Price basis Year one for 4 people
Lemlist Email $55 per month, unlimited users $660
Lemlist Multichannel $87 per user per month $4,176
Apollo Basic (reported) $49 per user per month $2,352
Reply.io Email Volume (reported) $49 per user per month $2,352
Instantly Growth $47 per month, per workspace, monthly billing $564
Smartlead Base $32.50 per month, per workspace $390
SDRclose Starter $39 per month, per workspace $468

Two things fall out of that table. Lemlist's own Email plan is one of the cheapest ways for four people to send email, so a team that abandons Lemlist over per-seat pricing may be leaving on a plan it never had to buy. And the gap between $660 and $4,176 is the price of LinkedIn, SMS, WhatsApp and calling steps, which is worth paying only if your sequences actually use them.

The per-seat question also decides how you grow. A workspace price stays flat when a fifth person joins; a seat price does not. Our Apollo alternative guide for small teams runs the same arithmetic against Apollo's seat minimums.

Alternatives if you want multichannel with LinkedIn

If LinkedIn is where your buyers are, do not downgrade to an email-only tool to save money. Hunter's State of Cold Email 2026, based on 31 million emails plus a decision-maker survey, found 50.5% of respondents prefer to be approached on LinkedIn against 25% for email.

Reply.io is the closest structural match: email plus LinkedIn and calling. Amplemarket's May 2026 breakdown reports Email Volume at $49 to $59 per user per month annually and Multichannel at $89 per user, with LinkedIn at about $69 per account and calls and SMS at about $29 per user on top, taking a fully loaded seat to roughly $187. Our Reply.io alternative guide covers the reported three-month minimum.

AiSDR bundles LinkedIn accounts into its plans, with one on Solo at $250 a month, as of September 2026, though its higher tiers bill quarterly.

Ask any LinkedIn automation vendor how it protects the account. Reviewers cited in SalesRobot's Reply.io review report LinkedIn automation causing account blocks, and that risk applies to the category rather than to one product.

Alternatives if you want research, reply classification and booking in one

Multichannel is one way to add value to a sequence. Depth on a single channel is another, and it is cheaper. The trade is fewer channels in exchange for knowing something true about each prospect and handling what comes back.

That matters because of what the replies actually are. Hard bounces, automatic acknowledgments and out-of-office notices all land in the same inbox as real answers, and counting them as replies inflates the only number you steer by.

SDRclose researches every prospect before the first email and stores the notes on the lead record: a summary, facts with sources, a recent win, a personal hook, the company pain and a recommended angle. Emails are written per prospect, and an outbound filter strips the AI tells (em dashes, "leverage", "synergy", "I hope this email finds you well") before anything is queued. Nothing sends without approval unless you switch a specific sequence to autopilot.

After the send, inboxes are checked about once a minute. A reply stops the sequence for that lead and is classified as interested, not interested, out of office, bounce, automatic reply or another bucket. Out-of-office return dates are parsed so the follow-up resumes on the next business day, hard bounces mark the lead bounced, and neither bounces nor out-of-office notices count as replies in your stats.

When a prospect agrees to talk, the software checks your connected calendar for real availability and books, proposes alternatives, or hands the thread to a human. Sending runs over standard SMTP and IMAP from your own Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho or other mailboxes, up to 12 rotated per account, with per-mailbox caps and a guard that refuses to cold-send from a mailbox still in warmup. See lead mining and sequences for how the pieces connect.

Credit Lemlist for publishing benchmarks against which to judge any of this. Its benchmarks page, updated August 10, 2026, calls under 2% below average, 3 to 5% average, 5 to 8% above average and 10% or more top tier, with SaaS at 2 to 4% and agencies and consulting at 4 to 7%. It recommends 4 to 6 follow-ups spaced 2 to 4 days apart and emails under 80 words.

Credits charged for failed lookups: how each tool bills a miss

Credits are where comparison tables usually stop being useful, because a credit means something different in every product. Three questions separate them.

  1. What does a failed lookup cost? DealsFlow's review lists credits charged for failed lookups among Lemlist's recurring complaints. Verification costs 5 credits and a phone number 20, so misses add up on a large list.
  2. Do unused credits survive the month? Reviewers report that Apollo credits do not roll over, per Salesforge's Apollo review. One r/coldemail thread on expiring credits sums up the frustration: "The SaaS tax hits different when credits expire mid-campaign."
  3. Is the credit priced per action or per record? Lemlist sells 1,000 credits for $10 and spends them per lookup. SDRclose spends 3 credits to mine a lead, 3 to research it and 1 for each email or auto-reply sent, so a lead worked end to end costs about 10 credits out of the 7,500 included on Starter.

On rollover, our plan credits are granted per billing period, monthly or twelve months at once on annual billing, while purchased top-ups (2,500 credits for $19, or 10,000 for $59) carry over and are only drawn after the plan allowance, as of September 2026. Ask every vendor those three questions before you compare headline prices, because the subscription is rarely the whole bill.

When to pick Lemlist instead

  • You want LinkedIn, WhatsApp and calling in one cadence. SDRclose is email-first and does not dial phones or send LinkedIn messages. If a multichannel sequence is the requirement, Lemlist Multichannel is a fair price for it.
  • You want the template library. Lemlist publishes community templates with reply-rate data attached, which is a genuinely useful starting point for a team without a copywriter.
  • You send email only and want a flat plan. At $55 a month annually for 50,000 emails and unlimited users, the Email plan is competitive on its own terms.
  • You want a trial without a card. Lemlist gives 14 days with no card, which beats most of this category for evaluating without commitment.

The short version

The per-seat objection to Lemlist applies to Multichannel, not to its Email plan, and a fair comparison has to say so. The real question is whether you are buying channels or depth. Four seats of Multichannel at $4,176 a year buys reach across LinkedIn, SMS and calls.

If your buyers answer email and your problem is what happens after they reply, that budget buys something different: research on every prospect, a personalized draft, a review queue, reply classification, out-of-office handling and booking, at $39 a month for the whole workspace. Compare plans and pricing, or start a 7-day trial and run one sequence from your own mailbox before you renew anything.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Lemlist cost per user?

Only the Multichannel plan is per user: $109 a month, or $87 on annual billing, for five senders per user plus LinkedIn, SMS, WhatsApp and calling, as of September 2026. The Email plan is not per seat at all. It is $69 a month, or $55 annual, for 50,000 emails with unlimited contacts and unlimited users.

Does Lemlist charge credits for failed lookups?

Reviewers say so. DealsFlow's March 2026 review lists credits charged for failed lookups among Lemlist's recurring complaints, alongside a Chrome extension that has to be reinstalled and shallow analytics. Credits cost $10 per thousand, with verification at 5 credits and phone numbers at 20, so a large list with poor coverage burns budget quickly.

Is Lemlist worth it for a solo founder?

If you send email only, the Email plan at $55 a month on annual billing is competitive, and the 7-day trial needs no card. The calculation changes if you want prospect research, reply classification and booking included rather than assembled from separate tools, which is where a per-workspace AI SDR plan at $39 a month competes.

What is the best Lemlist alternative for email only?

For pure sending volume, Smartlead starts at $39 a month, or $32.50 annual, and Instantly's Growth plan is $47 a month, both per workspace as of September 2026. If you want the prospect researched, the email written per person, replies classified and meetings booked, SDRclose is $39 a month billed annually for the whole workspace.

Does Lemlist include reply classification?

Lemlist gives you a unified inbox and stops a sequence when a prospect replies, but reviewers describe its analytics as shallow. Sorting a real answer from a bounce, an automatic acknowledgment or an out-of-office notice, then resuming the follow-up after a stated return date, is the gap that reply-handling tools such as SDRclose are built to close.
